How I stopped my cat from waking me up at night

Cat sleeping on bed

I think we all know what it’s like to wake up to your cat meowing his head off… wanting you to feed him (but the bowl if half full), play with him, or just pet him. And then you look at the clock thinking perhaps you slept in or it’s almost time to get up… but it’s in the middle of the night!

And “the best part” is them sleeping through the day, rights?! This is such a classic thing for cat owners… But hear me out – I’ve cracked the code on this one. And it’s super simple! You can watch the below video I made, but I will also include some more info underneath it 😊

First, Play Time

So this isn’t just play time – you want to tire the cat out as much as possible lol. I do this even on days I take Chumka out on adventures – otherwise he will wake me up 🤦‍♀️I use my pet’s favourite wand/ “fishing rod” toy and go to town… until he starts panting, and then I give him max 5 minutes break and we do it again. For us, 2 rounds of that and Chumka is DONE DONE.

Second, Meal or Snack

After play time, I give Chumka some food – I don’t feed him kibble so he’s not free fed. I don’t necessarily have specific times when I give him food so he is used to being fed at different times. It’s comes in handy when you want to sleep in hehe.

I feed my cat 2-3 times a day, depending on my schedule, but this “half a meal”. If I don’t feed Chumka after play time, he will go into my kitchen cabinets looking for food 🤦‍♀️

I have a weekly newsletter focused on everything (adventure) cat related. I like to share what cat community finds beneficial, helpful tips/ advice, and talk about common challenges – such as how to sleep through the night as a cat owner. Plus some wholesome content to brighten your day and kick off your weekend with positive message. Sign up below…

Third, Food Puzzle

This one isn’t “a must” but it’s great to have it. I don’t leave the food puzzle out every night, but I always sleep even better when I do 😂 We have Petstages Rainy Day Puzzle and I highly recommend them. You have different difficulty levels to choose from which comes in handy.

Chumka gets so excited when he sees me setting them up. Not only it’s mentally engaging but also snacks… and who doesn’t love snacks?! The best part is, you can DIY one for $0!

Cat using puzzle Petstages Final words

That’s it! The crazy thing is, if I don’t do this routine, my cat WILL wake me up lol.  I hope you enjoyed this post and please give your pet(s) some love from me 🥹💛
